William Dalrymple's great-great-granduncle Captain Colin Mackenzie fought in the First Afghan war and was held hostage by the Afghans for a while. His latest book, Nine Lives - In Search of the Sacred in Modern India has been ranked as number one book on the on the Indian non-fiction section bestseller list. He has been traveling across India, Pakistan, the UK, Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Australia with some of the characters from his book; they are Sufis, Fakirs, Bauls, Theveram hymn singers and a prison warder, and a part-time Theyyam dancer considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
